Late last fall we welcomed Brendan Howey to the akta team. The plan was to slowly start piecing together a “welcome to the team” edit over the winter for release before summer. However, Howey’s tibia and fibula had other plans in store that sidelined this project as well as Howey.

After almost six months off the bike, Howey was cleared to get back to it. Initially, we entertained the idea of completing the video before year-end, but we weren’t sure Howey would be back up to speed after such a major injury. To our surprise, within just a few weeks of riding, Howey’s signature style had returned, and we quickly jumped into planning mode for a shoot.

It had been years since Howey had ridden Revelstoke bike park and he knew there was so much to explore there. That sealed it: Revelstoke became our destination. But not without complications. Just days before our trip from BC’s coast, a heat wave hit the province, threatening to close the park, and forest fires sparked all around Revelstoke.

Still, we pressed on and made the journey. With just two degrees to spare before the lifts would close, we got to work. The forest fires were contained, and if there was a silver lining, it was that the smoke gave us perfect midday light with diffused sun.
